There are many reasons why we need to bring the good news of the Gospel to the unchurched. I will just mention three reasons for evangelization here. Our God is an evangelizing God, evangelizing is required for our salvation, and we are working under a time constraint.
Jesus commands us in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) to “go” and “make disciples”. Evangelization is the first step in making a disciple. Jesus specifically admonishes us to teach, to set an example, and share the Gospel verbally.
CCC 1816 says that we “…must not only keep the faith and live on it, but also profess it, confidently bear witness to it, and spread it” and “Service of and witness to the faith are necessary for salvation”. Of course Jesus said: “Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father.” (Mat 10:32-33)
Evangelization can only occur while we have the opportunity here on earth. After we die we do not have another chance to help save one other soul or make one more disciple. As a matter of fact, committing sin and evangelizing are two things that you can do on earth, but not in heaven. Mortal sin will risk your eternal soul, evangelizing saves others from eternal death!
Evangelizing is necessary, it is fun, and it is serious business. Jesus promises to be with us “…until the end of age.”
